Register for Indian Citizenship: CAA Online Portal for Hassle-free Registration Process

The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) may soon be implemented. Prime Minister Modi could enact the CAA into law before the Lok Sabha elections. An online portal will be launched for this purpose. The central government has developed a separate web portal for the CAA. Reports suggest that online applications for the CAA are being accepted.

When will the CAA Online portal be launched?

Currently, there is no available information regarding the launch date of the CAA portal. However, it is speculated that the CAA could be implemented in March. The portal may be launched shortly after the implementation of the CAA. According to reports, work on the CAA portal has been ongoing for some time, but there has been a delay in obtaining government approval. Once approved, the CAA portal can be made live.

What will be required?

Individuals can apply online for citizenship in India through the CAA online portal. To do so, registration on the portal will be necessary, followed by document submission. Subsequently, a government investigation will be conducted after registration. If all documents are deemed correct, Indian citizenship will be granted.

What is the CAA law?

The Citizenship Amendment Act was passed in 2019. It provides for granting Indian citizenship to minorities from neighboring countries. Under this act, oppressed minorities from Bangladesh and Afghanistan can be granted Indian citizenship without requiring documents. 6 minorities, namely Hindu, Christian, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, and Parsi, are eligible to apply for Indian citizenship. Only those minorities who arrived in India before December 31, 2014, are eligible to apply.

Clarification on the CAA Online Portal

  • The CAA itself is a law passed in 2019.
  • The CAA was Implemented on 11 March 2024.
  • There hasn’t been an official announcement about a specific launch date for the portal in March.

The government issued the notification on the evening of March 11. With the implementation of CAA, there is anticipation regarding the changes it will bring.
